De prent toont de kostuums die gedragen werden tijdens de voorstelling. Het verhaal van de opera doet aan een sprookje denken waarbij prins Tamino een zekere Pamina moet redden van de hogepriester Sarastro en dan van haar eigen moeder. De operastuk neemt je dus mee naar een fantasierijke wereld, wat zich weer uit in de kostuums. De eerste figuur is de hogepriester Sarastro uitgerust met een lang kleed en geel hoofddeksel, anders dan de mode van toen.
