Text Any textual data included in the document GULIVERS REIS DOOR DE TIJD Deze prent uit het einde van de negentiende eeuw werd gedrukt en uitgegeven door Brepols publishers in Turnhout. De prent is een creatieve weergave van het verhaal van de ontdekkingsreiziger Guliver, die na een schipbreuk in het land van de Lilliputters terechtkomt: een land vol kleine mensjes. De Lilliputters binden Guliver meteen vast wanneer ze hem vinden maar hij verricht twee heldendaden waardoor hij het vertrouwen van het volk wint. Uit dankbaarheid bouwen de Lilliputters voor hem een boot zodat hij terug naar huis kan, maar de boot zinkt opnieuw en hij spoelt aan op een ander eiland. Dit keer een eiland vol reuzen, waar Guliver zelf de Lilliputter is. Nu ontvangt het volk hem wel vriendelijk: hij komt bij de koningin terecht die meteen dol op hem is. De reuzen bouwen een huis voor hem, maar een arend tilt het huis op en laat Guliver vallen in zee, waar een schip hem oppikt. Deze ludieke voorstelling van het verhaal richt zich voornamelijk op kinderen. Er zijn drie versies bewaard gebleven van deze prent, elk met kleine verschillen. Het meest opvallende verschil is dat in de eerste versie Guliver de brand uitplaste, terwijl hij in deze versie een gieter gebruikt. Mogelijk was de eerste versie te expliciet, ook de dood van Guliver komt hier niet aan bod. Brepols presenteerde hier een bekend verhaal dat veel succes had en heeft. Ook vandaag is het verhaal nog erg bekend, denk maar aan de film uit 2010 van Rob Letterman. Text Any textual data included in the document DE HEROÏSERING VAN NAPOLEON Op dit mannekensblad zie je twintig hoogtepunten uit het leven van Napoleon Bonaparte. Van zijn opleiding in Brienne over zijn oorlogsoverwinningen tot aan zijn verbanning naar Sint-Helena in 1815 en zijn dood in 1821. Het laatste beeld toont zelfs zijn ‘vergoding’. Brepols presenteert Napoleons vereeuwiging niet alleen, maar vereeuwigt Napoleon ook letterlijk. Zoals Napoleon generaties generaals inspireerde na zijn dood, zo bewonderde hij zijn eigen helden tijdens zijn leven. Hij noteerde zo zijn naam boven die van Hannibal op de berg van Sint-Bernard (beeld 5) en bezocht het graf van Frederik II van Pruisen (beeld 8). De prent schetst een heel heroïsch beeld van Napoleon en zet zijn militaire successen en kwaliteiten in de verf. Zijn nederlaag bij de Slag van Waterloo wordt niet toevallig verzwegen. Hoewel Napoleon uiteindelijk tot het kamp van de verliezers behoort, komt hij toch naar voren als overwinnaar. Dit past in een langere traditie van levensbeschrijvingen van veldheren in mannekensbladen. Militaire volksprenten waren populair, omdat ze inspeelden op de actualiteit en omdat figuren zoals Napoleon tot de verbeelding spraken. Ook vandaag de dag blijft de figuur Napoleon nog altijd een geliefd onderwerp voor romantisering. Denk maar aan de film Napoleon van Ridley Scott uit 2023 of aan het boek Napoleon van Bart Van Loo uit 2014. Dat deze prent een van de favorieten was, kan je ook afleiden uit de onscherpe lijnen. Door de grote vraag naar de prent, werd ze veel bijgedrukt. Daardoor versleet het houtblok en werd de tekening steeds minder gedetailleerd afgedrukt.
