De prent is een creatieve afweging tussen mode van toen en het fantasierijke verhaal van de Toverfluit. Ik was vertrouwd met het operastuk, en heb zelf 10 jaar toneel gedaan aan meerdere Antwerpse academies. Ik ben dus grote fan van podiumkunsten, maar natuurlijk ook geschiedenis. Hoe worden deze soldaten van verschillende etniciteiten geportretteerd? Hoe worden deze volkeren beschreven door een Westerse bril? Deze vragen kwamen bij me op bij het zien van deze volksprent. Wanneer je de prent vluchtig bekijkt, denk je dat er niet veel verschil is tussen de rijen soldaten. Alle soldaten worden afgebeeld met een snor, een soort van hoofddeksel en wapen. Maar als je aandachtiger kijkt vallen de details des te meer op. De verf is niet erg precies aangebracht, waardoor sommige onderdelen moeilijker te zien zijn. Toch is er veel verschil aangebracht tussen de Turkse en Griekse tulbanden en dragen de Chinese sluipschutters een heel ander hoofddeksel. Ook hier kan weer de vraag gesteld worden: waarop zijn deze details gebaseerd? Hoe wist de maker van de prent het verschil tussen de tulbanden? Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound Er zijn heel wat elementen aan deze prent die me aanspraken toen mijn oog er voor het eerst opviel. Datgene wat er toch wel uitspringt is de manier waarop de auteur op slechts één bladzijde een boeiend verhaal weet over te brengen. Wat er zo boeiend is aan het verhaal, is dat het een combinatie lijkt te zijn van verschillende verhaalvormen. Zo lijkt de volksprent een moraal te bevatten en hiermee elementen van de fabel in zich te dragen. Daarnaast toont de prent aan hoe vroeg de Belg reeds gepassioneerd was door stripverhalen. Vandaag de dag kijkt de Belg met trots naar zijn getekende volkshelden als Lucky Luke, Blake en Mortimer, Kuifje, de smurfen en nog vele meer… . Deze prent toont aan hoe de traditie om verhalen op een geïllustreerde manier over te brengen wel iets eigen is aan de mens. Hoeveel volkshelden als Jan en Peerke van deze anonieme Brepols strip zouden wel niet schuilgaan achter Kuifjes schaduw? Op grafisch vlak toont de prent dan weer welk vakmanschap eraan te pas is gekomen: Van de verscheidene kleuren waarmee de prent is ingekleurd tot de komische manier waarop de opgezwollen gezichten van Jan en Peerke getekend zijn. Het mannekensblad toont bovendien de rijkdom van de Nederlandse en Franse taal en spreekt daarmee de taalliefhebber in mij aan. De zin “Met begeerlijkheid naderen zij den bieënkorf” doet mijn hart simpelweg verblijden en verkneukelen van plezier.
